Born on January 17, 1917, in Kandy, Ceylon (Sri Lanka).- In 1972, he founded the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) after a fallout with the DMK leadership.
- Midday Meal Scheme: Launched to provide free meals to school children, it became one of his hallmark policies.
