- Low Public Disclosure Rate: As of March 2025, only 98 out of approximately 1,134 judges (about 13%) from the Supreme Court and High Courts in India have publicly disclosed their assets.
- Voluntary Declarations: Judges have been required since 1997 to declare assets to the Chief Justice, public disclosure has remained voluntary, with most declarations coming from only a few High Courts like Kerala, Punjab-Haryana, and Delhi.
- Supreme Court Initiative (2009): In 2009, the Supreme Court decided to voluntarily publish judges’ asset declarations on its official website, though this has not been uniformly followed.
- Call for Legal Mandate: A Parliamentary Committee has recommended enacting a law to make asset declarations by judges mandatory, aiming for greater transparency and accountability in the judiciary.
