1. The Tamil Nadu government has officially upgraded seven town panchayats—Polur, Chengam, Kanniyakumari, Sankagiri, Kothagiri, Avinashi, and Perundurai—to municipalities.
  2.  These upgrades have been carried out under the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act, 1998.
  3. Over the past ,the state has created 10 new municipal corporations and 31 municipalities, marking a significant step in urban development.
  4. 149 panchayats, 4 municipalities, and 5 town panchayats are currently in the process of being merged with 16 municipal corporations.
  5. Upon completion of this restructuring, Tamil Nadu will have a total of 25 of the municipal corporations , 146 municipalities, and 491 town panchayats in the state.
