1. The Tamil Nadu government has introduced a new tax through the Tamil Nadu Mineral Bearing Land Tax Act, 2024, aiming to collect revenue from lands containing minerals.
  2. This tax, applicable to 32 different minerals, is expected to yield around ₹2,400 crore annually for the state.
  3. Leaseholders of both major and minor minerals are required to pay the tax starting from April 4, 2025.
  4. The tax rates vary by mineral type, with the highest being ₹7,000 per tonne for Sillimanite and the lowest ₹40 per tonne for clay minerals.
