The Toda Tribe, residing in the Nilgiris Hills of Tamil Nadu, celebrated their traditional “Modhweth” festival to mark the New Year.
This significant cultural event is also known as the Buffalo Festival and is typically held on the last Sunday of December or the first Sunday of January.
The festival is celebrated at the Moonpo temple in Muthanadu Mund, a village in the Nilgiri district.
Significance: The Modhweth Festival is the most important annual ceremony for the Toda tribe. It involves prayers to the deity known as Thenkish Amman, seeking blessings for good health, rain, and a bountiful harvest.
Rituals: The festival includes traditional Toda dances performed outside the temple. Young people demonstrate their strength by lifting a greased boulder weighing 80 kilograms.
Cultural Heritage: The Modhweth Festival showcases the deep connection of the Toda tribe with nature and their rich cultural heritage. It is also a significant event for promoting tourism in the region.
