Published on: April 14, 2025
- The Vembur sheep, also known as Pottu aadu, is primarily found in Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar districts of Tamil Nadu.
- It gets its name from its distinctive coat, which features white fur with irregular reddish-brown and occasionally black fawn patches.
- These unique markings make it easily distinguishable from other sheep breeds in India.
- Vembur is one of the five native hair sheep breeds of Tamil Nadu, along with Madras Red, Mecheri, Chevvadu, and Kilakarasal.
- The breed is known for its drooping ears, short tail, tall lean frame, and strong adaptability to dry climates, earning official recognition from the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources in 2007.
