• The Vishwamitri River Flood Mitigation Project is a multi-phase initiative undertaken by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) to address the recurring flooding issues in Vadodara, India.
  • The project aims to improve the river’s capacity to handle increased water flow during heavy rainfall, thereby reducing the risk of flooding in the city.

Key Components of the Project:

  1. River Channel Modification:
  • Straightening meanders in certain sections to improve water flow.
  • Widening and deepening the river channel to increase its water-carrying capacity.
  1. Additional Structures:
  • Construction of an additional spillway at Ajwa Dam to regulate water release.
  • Reduction of the crest level of Ajwa Dam to increase its storage capacity.
  1. New Buffer Pond:
  • Creation of a new storage pond near Kotambi and Bhaniyara to store excess water during heavy rainfall.
  1. Stormwater Network:
  • Upgrading and expanding the existing stormwater drainage system to efficiently channel rainwater away from the city.
  1. Rainwater Harvesting:
  • Promoting rainwater harvesting techniques to reduce the amount of water flowing into the river during heavy rainfall.
