  • The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, passed by the Lok Sabha on April 2, 2025, introduces significant changes to the management and administration of waqf properties

Key Provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025:

  1. Inclusion of Non-Muslim Members – The bill proposes adding non-Muslim representatives to state and central waqf boards for inclusivity and transparency.
  2. Removal of ‘Waqf by User’ Concept – Properties can no longer be designated as waqf solely based on long-term religious use without formal documentation.
  3. Inheritance Rights Protection – Ensures that women’s and children’s inheritance rights are safeguarded before a property is declared as waqf.
  4. Dispute Resolution Changes – A senior government official, instead of waqf tribunals, will decide property disputes, with appeals allowed in the High Court.
  5. Increased Government Oversight – Enhances monitoring of waqf properties to prevent corruption, but faces criticism for potentially reducing waqf board autonomy.
