Zika virus has emerged in Pune district

- The Zika virus has emerged as public health concern in Pune district, Maharashtra. In 2024, Pune accounted for 125 out of 151 confirmed cases of Zika reported across India.
- Zika is spread by mosquitoes: Primarily through the bite of infected Aedes
- Often no symptoms: Many people infected don’t realize it. If present, symptoms are usually mild (fever, rash, joint pain, red eyes).
- Dangerous for pregnancy: Zika infection during pregnancy can cause severe birth defects like microcephaly and other neurological problems, and can lead to pregnancy loss.
- No cure or vaccine: Treatment focuses on symptom relief. There’s no specific medication to cure Zika or a vaccine to prevent it.
- Prevention is key: Avoid mosquito bites by using repellent, wearing protective clothing, and staying in screened or air-conditioned areas. Pregnant women should be especially vigilant.
