The Government previously conducted a separate exam to recruit officers for the Indian Railways. However, this scenario has changed. The update released on February 2, 2023, states that IRMS 2023 recruitment is now conducted through the UPSC CSE 2023, making preparation through top UPSC coaching even more valuable for aspirants.

Eligible candidates for the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) will be selected through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) via a new exam called the IRMS Exam.

The Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) is India's leading establishment with nearly 72% engineers in Group services. Previously, UPSC IRMS candidates were selected via the Indian Engineering Service Exam and the Civil Services Examination.

In general, IRMS is conducted to recruit candidates for various levels, from Junior Scale to HAG+. The exam is conducted by the UPSC for the Ministry of Railways.

To qualify for IRMS, candidates must fulfil the following criteria:

The IRMS is a two-tier examination. It consists of a Preliminary Screening Examination, followed by a Main Written Examination and finally an Interview.

Preliminary Examination

• Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 consist of objective-type questions and are conducted for 2 hours.
• IRMS question papers are available in both English and Hindi.

• Paper A – Candidates must choose one of the Indian Languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution (300 marks).
• Paper B – English (300 marks).

The final stage of the IRMS recruitment exam is the Interview/Personality Test. Candidates who pass the written exams are called for the Interview round.
