He is IRAS (Retd.) and a former Additional Member of Railway Board. Besides a postgraduation from Delhi University, he has a postgraduate (M.Phil) degree in Public Administration from International Institute of Public Administration (IIPA), Paris, France. Mr. Subramhanyan was selected twice to the prestigious Indian Police Service, but he chose to continue in the IRAS due to his love for Railways. He retired as Additional Member of Railway Board, Government of India. It was during his tenure as Senior Professor in the National Academy for Indian Railways (NAIA) that he gave certain recommendations to the Alagh Committee on Civil Services reform leading to special focus on Ethics through a separate paper introduced into the exam pattern from 2012.
