Eligibility

To become qualified for IPoS Group ‘A’ officer, candidates should meet certain eligibility conditions.

Age

Expected to be at least 21 years old. And it doesn’t have to exceed 32 years of age.

Education

A bachelor’s degree from a well-known university

Citizenship

Should be an Indian citizen, an inhabitant of Bhutan, Nepal, or Tibet (lived before January 1, 1962, in India) or an individual of Indian heritage.

Number of Attempts

Can make up to 6 attempts for the general category. Depending on the category, the number of attempts can vary.

Indian Postal Service Exam Pattern 

  1. Prelims – Objective-type questions and participants get negative marks for very wrong answers. The paper comprises General Studies and CSAT. The paper has an overall 80 marks and candidates will have 2 hours to finish the paper.
  2. Mains – This is a written descriptive exam and has 9 papers. Candidates of the IPoS will have 3 hours to complete each paper.
  3. Interview – Candidates passing the Mains Examination with the required cut-off marks will be chosen for the final Interview stage. Typically, the UPSC personality phase will be held in New Delhi at the UPSC Bhavan.

Training

Those selected by the direct recruitment will be sent for attaining FC Training (Foundational Course) at

  • Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA). This is located at Mussoorie
  • National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) (Nagpur)
  • Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (Hyderabad)

Upon completing the above, they are offered with skilled training program in Postal Management and Administration. This is conducted in Ghaziabad, in Rafi Ahmed Kidwai National Postal Academy (RAKNPA).

Duties and responsibilities – Indian Postal Service (IPoS)

The primary responsibilities of IPoS Officers revolve around administering the Postal/ RMS Division where they are posted.

  • Accountable to administer and manage the divisional postal services
  • Responsible for Postal Operations Management including working in post offices, timely delivery of letters and packages and supporting people if there are any issues
  • Oversee the entire Post Offices and Mail Offices.
  • Committed to plan for optimization and expansion of the postal network.
  • Accountable for Postal Finance Management which covers taking care of the money of the post office, such as budget management and planning finances.
  • Should be involved with Customer relations and Public Grievance Redressal Mechanism
  • Should coordinate with District, Police and other public authorities
  • Have a crucial role in Postal Technology and Innovations and are responsible for learning and adopting new technology to ensure postal services are modern for offering services like digital services and online shopping
  • Recruitment, Personnel Management, Promotion, Transfer, and Disciplinary aspects of employees and staff relations.
